This N’ That

Saturday morning,
I woke up to a very quiet house this morning. You see it’s the first weekend where I haven’t had a house full of people and activity going on. It’s strange. I’m twiddling my thumbs wondering what to do with myself. There’s no errands to run first thing in the morning, no need to take a shower right away so the next person can take theirs. Hum, just quiet. After five months I need to get used to this again.
Saturday afternoon,
After staring at the three tiered plastic cart that holds tons of photos I decided to make a trip to BestBuy. I was hoping they’d have some sort of easy to use scanner that I could use to transfer them to digital. The scanner I have takes so long and I wanted something that was small and easier and processed the pictures quicker. I found the Pandigital Personal Photo Scanner and it was only $99. You don’t even need to hook it up to a computer because it has a card reader. You just take the card reader when it’s full and transfer the pictures to the computer. I’m looking forward to using it on Sunday. My hope is that I can get everything transferred and get rid of more clutter in the house. My de-clutter efforts over the past year have paid off. I now have much more space and I can find things much easier. I’m not spending extra money purchasing things I already have but didn’t know I had. And through this process I’ve learned a lot about what I use and don’t use. After I finish the pictures it will be on to the CDs, then finish reading the books I have piled up. Once that’s done I should be all digital.

Back Where They Belong

Yesterday was a pretty good day. For starters I slept in late–haven’t done that in a while. Usually I’m up at the crack of dawn. When dad got home from church—yes I bailed so he went solo, we headed out to Panera’s Bakery to meet up with my aunt and uncle for nice breakfast of coffee and pastries. Our visit was cut short by my bladder. I suddenly had the need to go to the bathroom, maybe it was the gallon sized hazelnut coffee I couldn’t stop sipping. With 90 percent of the cliental seniors and only two bathrooms in a place that seats at least 500, I was out numbered and out witted. I gave dad that desperate look and we left. Five minutes later I was feeling much better. I tackled putting away the rest of the Christmas decorations that had been so lovingly put up by my mom before they left to come see me which as right before December 8. Can you believe they have been with me for almost five months? I watched HGTV for most of the day, made popcorn for me and dad did a couple of chores here and there—nothing noteworthy. It was very relaxing day in all. Dad and I went to Outback for dinner and each of us had the chicken Caesar salad. It was pretty good, and except for the Caesar dressing we left feeling like we ate some-what healthy. Later that night it began storming and towards the end of the evening we lost cable so we decided to call it a night. Today home health care is coming out and I need to do some vacuuming around the house. By the time I get that done and peruse some of email it will be time to think about packing. Well that’s about it from here. I’m glad to say not much to report. Whew!

We Made It

Posted in Uncategorized on April 24, 2010 by swizzmis

We finally made it!! My folks are back in Florida, where they belong, where they feel the most comfortable. Yesterday we flew back and I have to say I’ve been very anxious about the event for several weeks. I was so relieved that everything went smooth and without incident. Lore took us to the airport. The airline employees were great getting my mom to her seat and making sure we were all comfortable. My uncle picked us up from the airport and drove us home, even making us some sandwiches so we didn’t have to go foraging for food. I was worried about my mom going without nutrition that long but as soon as we got home she had something and some water and seems to be doing much better this morning. I think she’s glad to be back in her own surroundings. She’s been more mobile since we’ve returned which is a good sign that she feels a little better. I actually slept like a log and woke up refreshed this morning. The next few days are going to be busy. There’s so much to do, laundry, cleaning, errands..and the list goes on. I guess I’ll finish the last of my coffee and get crack’n.

Saving Pennies

Posted in This N' That on July 27, 2008 by swizzmis

For the past several weeks I’ve been carpooling to work. Because of this, I leave the house alot earlier so my blogging has suffered.  But the good news is I only have to fill up my gas tank every other week. I’ve been keeping track of my savings and I’m happy to say it looks like I’m saving $80 a month. Wow. Instant savings– I like that. I’ve also been doing little things around the house to save money, like making sure the lights don’t go on until the sun goes down. Unplugging lamps and electronics from the wall sockets that don’t get used. I found out that even though a lamp is turned off if it’s plugged in the current is still running through and adds to the electric bill. I’ve been going to coupons.com and also clipping them from the Sunday paper so I’m not paying full price at the grocery store. My dinning out has been cut back to once a week. When I reviewed my monthly spending I see that even though the price of everything (including air) has gone up I’m not being hit too hard with the increases. Now you may think I’m going overboard but I guess the cost cutting at work has rubbed off on me. Maybe it has been for awhile now. I’ve positioned myself to be just about debit free in the event I’m hit with a layoff. I don’t expect to be but you never know and it’s time to store away as many acorns as I can for the winter. The only challenge I still have to master is keeping the air conditioner set at a higher temperature. I may never get there because I’m a woman who is going through that time in her life when she needs cold moving air on her. <g> And now for my trick…down sizing the amount of stuff I have in the house. eBay here I come!
